    How to Bench Press

    The bench press is one of the most important upper body exercises that you can do. It works on your shoulders, back, and glutes.

    This is how you perform the bench press exercise:

    1. Set your feet by keeping them back towards your butt while keeping them flat on the ground.

      Depending on your body type and height, the position may look different for everyone. Use the planting of your feet to generate power from the ground through your entire body.
    2. Position yourself under the bar by getting far enough under the bar that it is easy to unrack. But not that far where you hit the pegs on the way back up. This position will be different for everyone depending on your body type, build, and bench press mechanics.
    3. Arch your back to maintain a neutral spine. This helps you keep your back tight and protected as you perform the bench press.
    4. Set your grip by grabbing the bar tightly like you’re trying to break it. Hold the bar  as far down on your palm as possible. A straight wrist will help you provide an optimal amount of force.

      Your grip width will depend on your body type and what muscles you’re trying to work on. People with longer arms will need a wider grip, while individuals with shorter arms will need a narrower grip.
    5. Take a deep, then unrack the bar. As you lock it out, let the breath out. Don’t waste your energy lifting the bar off the rack as it takes a lot of energy that you need if you’re lifting a heavier weight.

      Then take another deep breath and hold it as you lower the bar. When it reaches your chest, breathe out and forcefully push the bar back up.
