Ab Bench Buying Guide
What Is An Ab Bench

Ab benches are a broad category of fitness equipment. Any bench-like structure, which you can perform abdominal or core exercises on. These can include, but are not limited to: sit ups, decline sit ups, crunches, back extensions, nordic/hamstring curls, leg lowers, dragon flags, the list goes on.
The Benefits Of Using An Ab Bench

Safety
We’ve all heard about the supposed dangers of sit ups, that they can harm your back. But ANY exercise done incorrectly can result in injury, even walking! The back pad on the ab bench gives your back support during the eccentric part of the movement (when you are going back down). The ankle supports enable you to engage your core, and perform abdominal exercises effectively and with proper technique.
Convenience
It used to be that if you wanted to use a piece of equipment like an ab bench, you would need to drive to your local gym. Then once you got there, you might be waiting in line to use that piece of equipment. All of this lost time could be spent having a better workout, or living a more fulfilling life. Thankfully, because so many companies have created their own ab benches, you don’t need to waste anymore of your precious time. Even if you live in a small apartment, or even a tiny home, you can find an ab bench that works with your space.
Versatility
Ab benches are incredibly versatile. Depending on how many settings your particular bench has, you could do your entire workout routine using the bench. Here are a few of the literally hundreds of exercises you can perform:
● Situps, decline sit ups, crunches
● Nordic hamstring curls
● Pushups – for beginners, you can put your hands on the bench to make it easiest, for more experienced athletes, you can put your feet on the bench to make it harder
● Rear leg elevated split squat, with your back foot on the ankle rest
● Back extensions
● Leg Lowers
What To Look For When Purchasing An Ab Bench

Size
Ab benches come in a ton of different sizes, depending on your living space. Many ab benches fold up, and can be stored in a small space like under the bed. Most companies publish how much room their ab bench takes up, both when in use, and when folded up. Measure the space you’ve got, and see what options you have.
If you are hoping to perform dumbbell or barbell exercises on your bench, like a dumbbell bench press, you should go for a wide bench. This will give you the extra stability you need when adding weight.
Construction & Weight Capacity
Go for ab benches that are made from high quality steel or iron. If you are a heavier athlete, or if you plan on using a lot of weight on your bench, make sure you check the maximum weight capacity before purchasing. Some benches will be rated to 1000lbs, while others can only hold 200lbs.
Supports
Make sure that your ab bench comes with ankle supports or ankle pads. This will allow you to perform abdominal exercises safely and effectively. If you are an older athlete, or a beginner athlete, you might also want to look into benches with lumbar supports. For this, I would go with the JIAX ab bench above.
Versatility
Write down all the different exercises you’d like to perform on your ab bench. Now, does the bench you are looking at allow you to perform all of them? Ab benches have a wide variety of settings. Some can go incline and decline, some only flat and decline, and some stay in the declined position. Make sure before purchasing that you can actually use that bench for all the activities you are buying it for. Otherwise, you’re wasting your money.
FAQs for Bench Press Racks
What Is The Difference Between An Ab Bench and A Workout Bench?
Ab benches can at the very least go into a declined position, which allows for safer, more effective sit ups.
Standard workout benches are often completely flat, or only go from flat to incline, making them less useful for ab exercises, and more suited to things like bench pressing.
You can still perform ab exercises on a standard workout bench, but you will be limited in the number of exercises you can perform.
Can I Use My Ab Bench for Bench Press?
Some Ab benches are made durably enough to withstand the weight and stability needs of the bench press. Check your maximum weight rating. Also check to see if the manufacturer has specifically stated whether or not you should use dumbbells or barbells on the bench. Some ab benches are very narrow, making them unstable for weight exercises.
Can I Use The Ab Bench For Dumbbell Presses?
Yes, you can use the ab bench for performing the dumbbell press exercise if the bench is long enough and the back support is wide enough. A firm and wide bench provides the stability and support you need to do the exercise. Also check the maximum weight rating for your bench.
Can I Perform Other Exercises On My Ab Bench?
Depending on your ab bench, there are many exercises aside from sit ups that you can perform using an ab bench. These include, but are certainly not limited to; back extensions, Nordic hamstring curls, bench press, dumbbell rows, rear-elevated split squats, decline and incline bench press.
How Do I Perform Sit Ups on an Ab Bench?
The decline sit up is one of the most effective ab exercises you can do on an ab bench. Check out the video above, and the instruction below for how you can safely and effectively perform this movement.
This is how you perform the decline sit up exercise:
- Set your ab bench to the decline position. Make sure the ankle supports are at an adequate height for you.
Depending on your body type and height, the position may look different for everyone. Hook one foot into the ankle supports, and sit on the bench. Hook your other foot into the ankle supports. - With your hands in front of your chest, squeeze your entire core. This includes your back muscles.
- Slowly, perform the eccentric (lowering) portion of the exercise. Keep your back flat, or slightly arched. We do NOT want to curl down. Inhale as you lower.
- Touch your back to the pad, but do not lose the tension in your core.
- Reverse the motion, keeping your core tight, and exhale as you perform the concentric (raising) portion.
How Do I Perform Sit Ups on a Glute Ham Developer?
If you are past the beginner phase of exercising, and you’re looking for a more gnarly variation of sit up, look no further than the GHD sit up. This exercise will light up your abs almost immediately, but you need to ensure you are doing them properly. Check out the video above and the instructions below on how to perform this exercise safely and effectively:
- Sit on the pad, and hook your feet into the ankle supports. Your butt should be over the pad, and more of your hamstrings should be on the actual pad. Most GHDs are very versatile, so play with the setting until you’re comfortable.
- Keeping your core as tight as possible, start lowering yourself towards the ground.
- At first, only go until your body is parallel with the ground, and then reverse the movement. When this gets easy, go all the way back until you can touch the ground with your finger tips. Then, using both your arms and core, reverse the movement.
- When this also becomes too easy, you can add a medicine ball or weight plate.
Conclusion
When choosing an Ab Bench, there are many factors to consider. The room size and height, budget, your fitness level, and overall space.
However, out of the ten Ab Benches that we got to test and research, we recommend the ONETWOFIT Adjustable Weight Bench because it combines the best of durability, easy storage, and price point. .
If you’re a beginner, or an older athlete, or an athlete recovering from injury, we recommend the JIAX Sit Up Bench. This is because the JIAX bench comes with additional support options, including a lumbar support pad. This extra support allows you to perform exercises in a safer, more effective way, while you build your base fitness.

Not only can you perform your decline sit ups, but you can also set this bench flat and use it for heavy bench pressing. This bench is made with the renowned Rogue quality and durability.
