Adjustable Kettlebell Buying Guide

What Is An Adjustable Kettlebell

An adjustable kettlebell is a type of free weight or dumbbell that is round with a flat base and an arced handle. It may look like a cannonball with a handle.

The difference between a regular kettlebell and an adjustable kettlebell is its ability to change the weights. Regular kettlebells are fixed at a certain weight while adjustable kettlebells can cater to a variety of weights.

Unlike a dumbbell, a kettlebell’s center of mass extends past the hand. Kettlebells can be thrown, swung, juggled, pressed, moved, held, and manipulated in different ways, allowing you to work on all the muscles in your body for your workout. They are a highly efficient way to tone your body, lose weight, increase your cardio-vascular fitness, strength, and your overall joint health, flexibility, and mobility.

The Benefits Of Using An Adjustable Kettlebell

Space Efficient

Adjustable kettlebells take up less space than normal kettlebell and any other workout equipment. As you don’t have multiple kettlebells for different weights or other machinery, you’re able to workout in a limited space effectively.

Portable and Convenient

Finding ways to workout consistent can be difficult, especially when you’re busy or on the move. Adjustable kettlebells are easy to handle and to use. They remove the hindrance of having to clean up your mess after every workout and are very easy to take along with you while you’re on the go.

Cost Efficient

Throughout your workout, you may need to use different weighted kettlebells. This can get expensive when you begin expanding extra money for a kettlebell at a different weight. Adjustable kettlebell provides the cost saving benefit of having all of these weights into one kettlebell, so you can adjust the weight to your desired load.

Improve Core Strength and Stability

Kettlebells exercises are a form of ballistic training that works on explosive power, maximizing acceleration while minimizing deceleration. These movements stimulate the ab muscles well as it requires coordinated breathing and core contraction. This improves your core strength and stability immensely while not doing specific ab exercises.

As kettlebell movements are multiplanar, you are able to work your core from all directions, resulting in building a well-rounded core strength.

Enhances Body Awareness and Coordination

Kettlebell movements are dynamic as you are swinging them around, between your legs, above your head, side to side, allowing you to get a better awareness of your body. This mind to muscle connection and focus will develop, helping you coordinate better to your body

This is different to conventional training with machines or barbells as these movements are more linear and less dynamic.

Improve balance and Stabilizer Muscles

When your training with machines, you are producing force and moving in a fixed path. While training with kettlebells, you must control your movement path. This requires strengthening the stabilizer muscles for each part of the movement.

Having strong stabilizer muscles is crucial to improve your balance and control over your body.

Fat Burner

Using Kettlebells is a great way to burn fat.

Swinging a kettle burns as much as 20 calories per minutes. This means you burn 400 calories in a 20 minute workout. In comparison to running, you would need to a 6 minute per minute pace.

Increase Range Of Motion

Kettlebells are a great way to loosen your body. As the movement patterns require you to move though many planes of motions while controlling the force and torque. Eventually, you’ll be able to increase your limits and have greater flexibility in your joints.

This is crucial as you get older, because many people stop neglect training resulting in an increased chance of injury to your joints, muscles, and ligaments.

Improve Weaknesses and Muscle Imbalances

Kettlebells reveal weaknesses in your strength, coordination, and movement.

When you begin using kettlebells, you may notice some areas that are tight or harder to move, maybe feel uncomfortable in certain positions. That is because you may have weaknesses or imbalances due to lifting, posture, and lack of movement.

Kettlebells helps strengthen these weaknesses and imbalances through using whole body exercises, engaging the muscles and bracing the force.

What To Look For When Purchasing An Adjustable Kettlebell

Weight Range

The ideal weight for using an adjustable kettlebell depends on your fitness level, goals, skill, and strength.

If you’re looking to increase strength, look for heavier weight level adjustable kettlebell. If you’re looking for more cardio, take a look at a lighter weight level adjustable kettlebell.

For beginners, we recommend men starting with 25 lbs and women with 15lbs.

Avoid the trap of going too heavy or too light. Lighter kettlebells makes it difficult to perfect your form, reducing the benefits from your kettlebell workouts.

Size

Adjustable kettlebells are normally larger and less compact than normal kettlebells. That’s because they have a shell that you can adjust for adding or moving weights.

The more weight increments or levels your kettlebell has, the bigger the construction will be

Handle Width

Make sure your kettlebell handle is thick and wide enough to provide a comfortable grip when you place both hand together. Otherwise it will limit your kettlebell workout options.

Some people may find steel handles uncomfortable. If so, we recommend finding powder-coated handles to reduce the stress and lack of grip on your hand.

Adjustability

Some adjustable kettlebells take 15 minutes in adding and removing weights, wasting time on your workout. It’s critical to find a kettlebell that has a wide range of weights that are quick and easy to adjust.

Some models have a switch that holds the weights in place, some have a pin, twist, and click in system, and others have a slide on and off disc system.

Whatever weight switching kettlebell you choose, make sure it’s solid, effective, and reliable.

Material

Steel and cast iron kettlebells are always the better option in comparison to plastic, rubber, or any similar material. This is because the materials are sturdy and ensures your safety when used properly.

Kettlebells that are made with any powder, vinyl, or additional coating can help protect your floors and hands, while being more resistant to chipping and scratching.

Can You Build Muscle With Just Kettlebells?

Yes, kettlebells is a fantastic modality for building muscle if you know what you are doing. It is a compound exercise based on multi-joint movement patterns instead of a single joint which is usually found in isolation exercises.

Kettlebells are made for compound movements and they are the best for muscle hypertrophy. Kettlebell exercises employ movement patterns such as hinge, push, squat, pull, rotation and anti-rotation movements, similar to how you should move as a human.

As you will be working your joints through your full range of motion, you will have less pressure on your spine. Over time, this will recruit more muscles as you are using their full capacity resulting in more muscle growth and strength.

How Heavy Should My Adjustable Kettlebell Be?

Here is what we recommend depending on your fitness levels.

If you’re an average inactive woman, we recommend starting off between 9 lbs to 13 lbs.

If you’re an average active woman, we recommend starting off between 15 lbs to 25 lbs.

If you’re an average inactive man, we recommend starting off between 15 lbs to 25 lbs.

If you’re an average active man, we recommend starting off between 25 lbs to 45 lbs.

These are guidelines but your ideal strength to move the kettlebell weight will be dependant on your practice, fitness level, age, and experience with kettlebell.
